Füvessy Anikó: XIX. századi tiszafüredi festett bútorok

Anikó Füvessy 19th Century Painted Tiszafüred Furniture Several pieces of painted furniture have entered our collections from the Tiszafüred area of a type not found anywhere else in Hungarian painted folk furniture. The dating and other references relating to the furniture suggest they were made between 1838 and 1881. Their main characteristic is their carved or painted roundels containing the main motifs. The marbling on the furniture was initially black and later red (and occasionally blue). The main motif is the pomegranate bouquet, accompanied by carnations and tulips. The bouquet either stands in a vase or tied together with a ribbon. The supplementary motifs are made up of dense, multicoloured, undulating rows of leaves, and tulips drooping away from the accompanying black tendrils. These are features also present on chests, wall letter-holders and jar holders. On some pieces the roundels are replaced by leafy bouquets of flowers. The makers of the furniture were highly trained carpenters working within the confines of the guild. With the help of the Tiszafüred carpentry guild papers, birth registers and stylistic analyses this study makes an attempt at identifying the carpenters in question. From the source material it is possible to conclude that the roundel style can be linked with the work of a particular workshop. The head of this workshop was József Kruspyr. When not tied to the locality, the style was taken further afield by those who had studied their craft in Tiszafüred. The bouqueted versions were the most highly sought after works. From the dates of manufacture (1852,1853) their maker must have been either Ferenc Gittel, or András Budai, who only worked in Tiszafüred for a short time. 238
