Mária Flórián Pál Vágó's Illustrations in the Volumes of "The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Words and Pictures" Of aristocratic upbringing and born on the Great Hungarian Plain, Pál Vágó (1853-1928), in the spirit of the age and in keeping with the identity of the place of his birth, was attracted to the hussars and ceremonial Hungarian costume, as well as the peasants and the animals of the region he grew up in. These are topics that appear in his history and genre paintings. Die Österreichisch-Ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild, published between 1884 and 1902, was designed to allow the peoples of the Monarchy to become acquainted with one another. Pál Vágó was to make many illustrations for the volumes dedicated to Hungarian themes, and it is on those illustrations he made on specifically ethnographical topics that this paper focuses. Vágó's illustrations were executed in the spirit of the ethnographic research being done at the time. Apart from his depictions of decorative costumes and festive traditions his most significant works portray everyday peasant life. In his pictures one is given precise and detailed representations of the landscape and the ethnography of various regions of the country. 105
