Júlia Domán The Gyula Doktay Bequest at the Lajos Hatvány Museum The Hatvan local history collection that existed before the Second World War, founded on the initiative of chief constable József Révász, had by 1945 been completed destroyed and carried off by the local inhabitants. After the Second World War, architect Gyula Doktay began gathering together documents of local historical interest and archaeological finds, while at the same time documenting the ancient monuments. Finally, on 1st January 1969, after a great deal of effort, the Hatvan Municipal Museum (later the Lajos Hatvány Museum) came into existence, made up of a collection based on those local objects which had been assembled by Gyula Doktay and two teachers, Lóránt Szántó and Gábor Németi. The museum initially occupied some rooms in a wing of the Grassalkovich Palace before finally arriving at its present home, Sörfőző (Brewery) House, following several changes in premises. Despite the many difficulties they faced those working at the museum adopted a high public profile right from the very outset. The museum's first exhibition, dedicated to the memory of artist Gyula Hatvani Perlusz, opened on 31st August 1969. 286
