Tadeusz Burzynski Tradition and Change. The Artistic Heritage of the Countryside of the San Basin in Southeastern Poland The aim of this paper is to show the process by which the traditional rural culture and the folk art of the San River Basin, the area known in the ethnographical literature as the San River Marches, has been subject to loss and change. The cultural heritage of this area has been shaped by various geographical, natural, demographic, ethnic, ethnographical and religious circumstances over the ages. For decades culture and art have experienced loss and change. This is a process connected with socio-economic, political and cultural change as well as the cultural and technical modernisation of villages, factors which have only managed to speed up the disintegration of the "old patterns and value systems" typical of rural society. The traditional modes of farming, building and architecture are being abandoned, old furniture and farming implements are going out of use, and country handicrafts and traditional folk art are disappearing. In this paper the author discusses the causes of cultural change in the region, summarises the ethnographical research which has been done on rural culture and shows the state of traditional forms of rural culture and how Przemyl's National Museum is attempting to preserve the region's heritage and conserve its folk art and the "vanishing rural professions". 438
