Szujkóné Lacza Júlia: Megemlékezés Andreánszky Gáborról (1895–1967)

state service as unsalaried junior clerk in the Fhytosystematical Institute of the University, under the direction of the late, J. Tuzson, the renowned» scientist of botany. Andreánszky obtained his leaving certificate (Absolutory) in 1922, and his University doctorate (summa cum laude degree) on 4 November 1922, majoring in phytosystematics, geology and chemistry, by his dissertation „The home species and distribution of the subgenus Gemiana L. Eugentiana Kusnez." The MS oi the dissertation is still extant in the Botanical Library of the Hun­garian Natural History Museum. Andreánszky was appointed demonstrator in the Phytosystematical Institute 1 February, 1923, then assisant lecturer on 1 January, 1929, and worked as such until 28 June. 1942. In 1941, he married Ilona Boér. Subsequent to the retire­ment of J. Szepesfalvi, he was called to the Botanical Department of the Hunga­rian National Museum and appointed as associate director, then promoted to di­rector, serving from January, 1943, till 1 November, 1945. The P. Pázmány Uni­versity of Sciences, Budapest, conferred to him the degree of associate professor, publicly announced at the session of the Botanical Society in December, 1943. After the end of World War II, Andreánszky at once proceeded to salvage the remains of the pricelless collection material of the Botanical Department, and to clear away the ruins. In September 1945, he was invited to lecture at the University, and was appointed full professor of the Phytomorphological and Phytosistematical Institute on 1 November, 1945, holding this chair till 28 July, 1953, when he was again recalled as research worker to the Botanical Depart­ment of the Hungarian Natural History Museum. He was pensioned in 1955, but this fact never affected the meaning of his life, paleobotanical researches, and he continued his studies in the vast collections of the Botanical Department. His inaugural lecture, as academician of the St. Stephen Academy, was given on 21 October, 1938, titled „The effects of Climatic Changes on Vegeta­tion", also published in the Bulletin of the St. Stephen Academy in 1939. The Hungarian Academy of Sciences elected him to corresponding member­ship on 30 May, 1945, and he served as Secretary of the Fourth Department of the Academy of Sciences in the years 1947—49. In 1952, the Scientific Qualify­ing Committee conferred to him the degree of Candidate of Biological Sciences. SCIENTIFIC WORK AT HOME AND ABROAD. Ever since the beginnings of his botanical studies, Andreánszky attended, as a member, the Botanical Sessions of the Natural History Society, and was foun­ding member of the Hungarian Botanical Society. The journal of this latter body, the „Borbásia", could be published only by his moral and material sup­port, as the distinct periodical of the young Hungarian botanists. He was Sec­retary of the Hungarian Botanical Society in 1944 and 1949, and one of the vice-presidents of the same society in 1944. Ha lectured at the III. Congress of the Society on „The petrified forest of Mikófalva", and also lectured on the 87th and 91st (1950), the 100th and 103th (1951), the May and December (1952), the October (1953), and the January (1954), sessions of the Society. He also lectured at the Botanical Sessions of the Natural History Society (November, 1946), and it was announced at the 470th session (December, 1943) that he was appointed Professor of the University. He participated in the sessions for the last time in the fall of 1967, attending the lecture of G. Wendelberger. 8
