Bitskey István: Pázmány Péter a várháborúkról
István Bitskey Péter Pázmány on the Castle Sieges This paper discusses the changing image of the Ottomans in the eyes of the Catholic political elite in the early modern period. We investigate how the fortress sieges and the expansion of the Ottoman Empire were interpreted by Péter Pázmány, the prominent writer and politician of the Catholic clergy and discuss the conclusions drawn by him. Protestants used the flagellum Dei rhetoric to place the topic of the Ottoman invasion in the context of confessional debates, which triggered a reaction from Catholics. The topic was first discussed by Pázmány in his polemical work, Reply ( 1603), followed by another polemical piece in 1605, entitled Ten Certitudes, in the addendum of which he gives a systematic and chronological account of the story of Mohammed and the entire history of the Ottoman Empire. In this work he also recounted the events of the 16th century casde sieges, adding his comments. The extended and revised version of this text was published several times in his main work, A Guide to Divine Truth (1613, 1623, 1637). His opinion is especially noteworthy, because it not only reflects the basic characteristics of the Hungarian Catholic political elites image of Hungary under Ottoman rule, but it had been influential throughout the 17th century. 205
