Zoltán Korpás - János B. Szabó “If They Are Corning as Emissaries, They Are Too Many; if as Antagonists, They Are Very Few” To the Background of the 1550 Unification Attempt: 16thCentury Habsburg Forces and Strategies in Europe Our paper sets out to describe the historical parallels of three Habsburg-ruled kingdoms - Naples, Navarre and the Low Countries - through four interrelated series of events in order to provide a more precise analysis ofHungary s 1550-1553 unification attempt. They reveal strategies which can put the Hungarian and Transylvanian events of the time in a new context. Our examples refute that Castaldo’s troops in 1551-1552 were only a “large group of emissaries” or a weak army instead of a military force of a rational size, as required by the era. Furthermore, we also suggest the existence of a conscious Habsburg strategy at the time, which, based on previous military and political experiences and the rationality of military and defence financing, managed to conquer or pacify certain areas with the support of continuous reinforcement and supplies. The reason for the failed unification attempts cannot be attributed solely to the mistakes of the Habsburg government: further research is also merited as to the role played in the processes by the Hungarian and Transylvanian estates and to the role of the Ottoman-French diplomatic relations which generated new crisis areas in Europe. 116
