The motive behind his military career was his desire to keep and then regain his Divény estates, but this original goal was never fully accomplished. His military activities were influential on the events of his era. In 1657 he became the captain of (Balassa) gyarmat and in 1659 he recaptured the castle of Buják. He also played an important part in the victory at Garamszentbenedekon 19th July 1664. He lost some of his estates to the Ottomans in the Peace of Vasvár in 1664, so he decided to fight on. After a complaint by the Pasha of Buda he was sentenced to imprisonment by Leopold Is court at Kassa, but he managed to escape from prison at the end of 1665. In January 1666 Leopold I ordered all of Balassa’s assets to be seized, but he opted for armed resistance, then eventually surrendered Divény and was taken into the custody of Palatine Ferenc Wesselényi in the Castle ofMurány. In 1667 he escaped from custody and in 1669 he regained his estates. He participated in the Wesselényi conspiracy, for which he was sentenced again, but he fled. In 1678 he joined the uprising led by Thököly. He died in 1680. 74
