Raimondo Montecuccoli’s Political Views on Hungary

This is the first attempt for the in-depth analysis of Raimondo Montecuccoli’s (1609-1680) work L’Ungheria nell'anno 1677 (Hungary in 1677), first published in 1812. In this work the prominent military leader and theoretician first discusses the difficulties of Hungary's military organisation and military supply, then adds his critical remarks on the country’s constitutional system and feudal political practices, followed by his recommended solutions for the issues raised. His opinion was probably based on first-hand experiences in Hungary. Since he filled important positions in the Viennese court, his views proved to be influential even during his lifetime and shortly afterwards in spite of the fact that the abovementioned work was published much later.
