LÁSZLÓ FODOR THE WALLS THAT ONCE WENT AROUND THE TOWN OF EGER Studies of the history of Eger always dedicate some lines, some more than others, to the topic of the walls that once surrounded and protected the town. These studies, however, usually only deal with the wall sections that can still be seen today. There are nevertheless wall fragments, rarely noticed by the casual observer, that are still there either integrated into later more important buildings, or tucked away in enclosed areas or hidden under the soil. This study hopes to open the readers eyes to these hidden treasures, while looking at the structural, functional and architectural elements that they share. Readers will be taken on a tour of the outline of one-time walls in their entirety, following the line of the lost sections, seeing those fragments that have survived and been rediscovered, and those sections that have survived in the more well-known older parts of the town, like those in the seminary, the Cistercian Grammar School and the sections of wall that have survived between Mária utca and Szent Miklós utca. We also consider the remains of the most important gateways: Hatvani kapu, Rác kapu and the Cifra kapu, the forms they took, the phases in their architectural histories and their additional civic functions.
