BODÓ SÁNDOR - PETERCSÁK TIVADAR: A végvári konferenciák évtizedei

Sándor Bodó - Tivadar Petercsák THE HISTORY OF THE BORDER CASTLE CONFERENCES In 1979 Sándor Bodó became the director of the István Dobó Castle Museum, and it was he - being as he was familiar with the position Eger held in Hungary’s history - who made it one of his academic duties to encourage research into Hungary’s border castles. To this end he managed to win over historian Professor Agnes R. Várkonyi, and it was she who made the opening address at the first conference in 1982, something she has done at every conference since in her capacity as the spiritual leader of the Eger border castle workshop. In 1989, Tivadar Petercsák oversaw what was a very successful conference in 1989. This examined some important periods and topics within the history of Hungary’s border castles in the 16th and 17th centuries in an interdisciplinary manner and with the active participation of young contributors. It was a move that helped to encourage a new and up-and-coming generation of researchers. The museum’s Studia Agriensia series has published the papers from all the conferences, with the result that the findings have entered the public domain thereby inspiring research into new thematic areas. The new findings have also found their way into the exhibitions that have been put on at the castle and into the battle re-enactments which also form part of the castle’s annual programme. 17
