Séta a mai várban

A WALK AROUND TO TODAY’S CASTLE Rising up above the town to the east, the walls and bastions of the castle, particularly following the reconstruction work of the last few decades, call on those down in Dobó tér to draw nearer and take a closer look at the historical fortress. In this paper the author takes you from the lower gateway and around the central part of the castle grounds, to the cannon mound where the Hungarian flag flies, and on to the courtyard, the onetime castle market place. It is here that you can see the most important surviving element of the castle, the Gothic episcopal palace. The Hall of Heroes on the groundfloor contains the tumba from István Dobó's tomb and statues symbolizing the defenders of the castle. Having visited the castle history exhibition the tour heads towards the ruins of the medieval cathedral, and the 10th— 11th century rotunda which lies adjacent to the entrance to the subterranean defences, the anti-mining passageways and cannon chambers, which many hundreds of thousands of visitors make a special effort to see. From here we pay our respects at the grave of Géza Gárdonyi, the author of Egri csillagok, before walking along the southern and western walls to Föld Bastion, where the bloodiest fighting took place during the autumn of 1552. The one-time barracks on the western side of the courtyard now belongs to the museum, and on the first floor you can find the Eger Picture Gallery containing paintings from the 15th to 19th centuries from Hungary and abroad. 175
