Az egri várvédelem 450. évfordulójának rendezvényei a Dobó István Vármúzeumban
CELEBRATING THE 450TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE EGER CASTLE DEFENCE AT THE ISTVÁN DOBÓ MUSEUM In 1552 a relatively small group of Hungarian soldiers defended Eger Castle against the invading army of the Ottoman Empire. This was the first time in the 16th century that the Hungarians were able to stop a Turkish army. The museum founded in 1958 in the fabric of the castle celebrated this victory with a programme-series in 2002. Probably the most important of the programmes was the exhibition. “The Cult of Eger Castle”, opened in September. The exhibition presents the evolution of the cult of the defenders and that of the castle itself. Two other exhibitions were also dedicated to the victory: at the Thália Theatre in Budapest a photo exhibition was opened bearing the title "Eger Castle: Past and Present”; and in Dobóruszka (Ruská, Slovakia) an exhibition dedicated to the life of castellar István Dobó, who was the leader of the defence in 1552. Conferences in April and in October were also held commemorating the occasion with the participation of leading historians. Schoolchildren from Hungary took part in the celebrations as well, since a competition took place in March demanding lexical knowledge as well as physical abilities from the competitors. The Border Castle Festival in July and the Eger Castle Day in October, both with many interesting programmes for visitors of all ages were organised and proved to be highly successful, since tens of thousands of people came to take part in the celebrations. 162
