VÉGVÁR ÉS KULTÚRA A 16. SZÁZADBAN - POLGÁR MARIANNA: „A kóbor lantos nyughelye” - A helytörténeti kutatások historiográfiai vázlata

Marianna Polgár “THE WANDERING MINSTRAL’S RESTING PLACE” The state of current local historical research On the 450th anniversary of the death of 16th century chronicler Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos the question once again arises as to where he was actually buried. It was the Pemezyth letter written to Tamás Nádasdy, and published in 1908, that established that “he was buried next to the vicars of Sár” on January 30th 1556. Although archaeological excavations took place around the parish church of Sár, which now forms part of the town of Sárvár, in 1933-34, the finds did not reveal anything, an opinion shared by the experts. In the Festschrift published in Sebestyén Tinódi Lantos’s honour in 1956, local historian István Naszádos mentioned the possibility that his body lay immediately next to Sárvár Castle, as was popularly believed. According to one of the more recent studies, by Péter Aradi published in 1991, analyses of the written sources have returned to the conclusion that Tinódi’s final resting place was either under, or immediately next to, Sár church. In 2006 Sárvár also paid its respects to Tinódi’s memory, when the Nádasdy Museum organized a conference featuring the finds and the documentation from the 1934 archaeological excavations. It can be concluded, therefore, that the most recent research has failed to produce any results, and that the earlier hypotheses regarding Tinódi’s resting place are still common currency. It is for this reason that you will find a memorial tablet on the walls of Sár church, and a Tinódi memorial in the park next to Sárvár Castle. 67
