Castle (October 13th 1596) he devotes two poems written in harrowing tones. That winter he returns to Poland, and publishes his poems two months later. The cycle of poems, that also went through two editions in its first two years, helped the author’s political rehabilitation. This is proved by the fact that he dedicated the volume to his old enemy chancellor Zamoyski. The volume is at once a lyrical confession, a contemporary document and an expression of the mood of the time, in which the virtues and vices of life in the border fortress are made manifest. 237
