During the 16l” century, one of the greatest challenges facing the Central European Habsburg Empire - and with it the Kingdom of Hungary - both from a military and a financial point of view, was the construction of a new border defence system against the Ottomans. The annual sum of 1,300,000-1,600,000 Rhenish florins (reinisch Gulden) which went towards paying the 21,000-22,500-strong border fortress army, as well as the other military expenditures (4-500,000 Rhenish florins) incurred during the 1570s and the 1580s, which came to a total of between 1,700,000 and 2,100,000 Rhenish florins, considerably exceeded the total income of the Kingdom of Hungary, which amounting to a sum of between 770,000 and 850,000 Rhenish florins.
