In medieval Hungary and indeed in the Habsburg Empire of the first half of the sixteenth century onwards an essential part of the war machine fighting the Ottomans was the gathering of information about their enemies’ military plans. This was achieved through an organization responsible for news gathering and the dissemination of news as well as a news agency which could work in tandem with the border fortress system. The history of anti Turkish information gathering during the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, in particularly its special leadership, its finance and the way it functioned, can be divided up into three periods. The period of the Kingdom of Hungary’s border fortress system which lasted until 1526 can be considered the first main period. The news gathering system at that time amounted to a multifarious and much compartmentalized organization. The second period (between 1526 and 1606) the elements which already existed in the Hungarian territories of the Habsburg Empire survived, but, at the same time one sees the arrival of new elements in the fields of news gathering, appraisal and spying. One of the basic changes seen in the 1550s was the setting up of a permanent Habsburg embassy in Constantinople. The third major stage in the history of news gathering occurred after 1606 during a period in which the Hungarian part of the Habsburg Empire enjoyed sixty years of peace. At the beginning of the 1620s the Court Military Council (Hofkriegsrat) set up a secret correspondent institution (Geheimkorrespondent) in each of the economic centres of the Ottoman Empire and in the castles of the Ottoman-Hungarian border regions (Constantinople, Sofia, Belgrade, Buda etc.)
