power of the tachistic gesture. It is consequently the tonal relationships, the preportioning and placement of the patches of colour as well as the resulting rhythm that give the works their strength. By using the expressive qualities of both watercolour and gouache he manages to make the paper surface both dynamic and lyrically poetic at one and the same time. His pictures always start with the human figure, concentrating on either the tensions existing between people, or their resolution, something which he believes is possible through a proper understanding of the European Christian tradition. Eger Watercolour Biennial award winnerin 1974,1978and 1996 Tamás SZI KORA (1943) Studied at the Hungarian College of Art (1970-76) under Géza Főnyi and Simon Sarkantyú. With the help of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation bursary he worked at the Cité des Arts in Paris in 1992-93. Since 1994 he has spent two to three months of every year in Paris at the invitation of the Cité des Arts. A Munkácsy prizewinner, his painting reflects a range of artistic interests, stretching from a lyrical expressionism to a constructive "box-geometry" containing within it a sacred symbolism and unique pictorial world. It was at the beginning of the 1980s that his first experiments into illusionistic spatial creation appeared in his drawings and watercolours. It was then he discovered the main element in his art: the box, as well as the motif of the abandoned drawer, which, when expressed through his sensitive painterly washes, appears as a poetic metaphor for our perception of time and space. He also produces box objects in which the classical geometrical values of the avantgarde are combined with a reference to Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades. Géza SZILY (1938) Born in Tolna, he graduated from the Hungarian College of the Applied Art in 1966. Since then he has exhibited regularly both at home and abroad. He has worked with a number of different media and materials: painted secco, tapestry, oil and tempera. Since the 1980s he has been working primarily in watercolour. He is a founder member and current president of the Hungarian Watercolour Society. His painting is of an intimate nature. He is a member of the middle generation of Hungarian painters, who embraced the modern world and with it the rapid changes going on in the art scene while managing to remain true to human emotions, profound and cathartic experiences and the high technical standards he set himself. His is a brightly coloured world capable of reshaping realities with rich imaginative surreal istic themes in which the exceptionally fine lyrical details provide his painting with their particular tension and unique atmosphere. More recently his palette has become darker. His use of watercolour in its purist sense he supplements with other water-based media Indian ink, walnut mordant, and mixed media.
