DÁVID, Á.: Predation by Muricid Gastropods on Late-Oligocene (Egerian) Molluscs Collected from Wind Brickyard, Eger, Hungary
(Number after the species name refers to the number of individuals bearing trace of Muricid prédation. Combination of three numbers after it shows the occurrence of different boring types; successful/unsuccessful/unfinished.) There is an unfinished boring on the right valve of the bivalve. While in the case of gastropods only successful borings can be observed on the shells. Tests of the first two gastropod species could have been washed by currents into the deeper part of the sublittoral region (Dávid, A. 1993). All the molluscan species are epibenthonic. Distribution of the collected mollusc species and individuals according to feeding habits is characteristic to the environment. Dominancy of scavengers and suspensionfeeders can be observed. In the case of molluscan species and individuals bearing Muricid borings herbivores are the most frequent. 3.2. Silty finegrained sandstone („x" layer) 7748 specimens of 122 species have been examined. Distribution of the above mentioned specimens and species according to molluscan classes is the following: Bivalves 44 species 913 specimens, Gastropods 74 specie 6534 specimens, Scaphopods 4 species 301 specimens. Muricid drillholes have been observed on the shells of bivalves and gastropods. The number of borings is seventy-five on 64 specimens of 21 species.
