SITE: UPPER HIGH STREET, NORTHTOWN UNIT OF .STRATIF~ AREA: TRENCH 4 ICATION ED DESCRIPTI ON: A layer of very mixed soil spreading southwards for several feet from Unit SO (southern wall of Building C) ; it contains many lumps of black soil, chunks of mortar (similar to that of Unit SO), many broken roof tiles and stones (both flint and chalk); part of its surface was destroyed by Unit 10 (pit for Victorian well) > ^ PHYSICALLY UNDER 1 10 I 1 Q 1 I 23 I 1 29 1 I 36 1 PHYSICALLY ABOVE I 48 I I 50 I 1 57 I I 61 I 1 | CORRELATED WITH I 1 I 1 I 1 1 I I 1 STRATIGRAPHIC SEQUENCE: C/nder 23 and 3ff; aftoue 48 FINDS : As seen during excavation, there were a few sherds of third-century pottery, but these were very abraded or worn and seem to be residual. INTERPRETATIONS : This deposit would appear to be 3 rubble resulting from the natural decay and destruction of Unit SO; fourth-century date probable on basis of finds from 23 and 36.
