Hajdú Zsigmond: Régészetünk három arculata

16 ZSIGMOND HAJDÚ THREE FACETS OF ARCHEOLOGY In his brief argumentative essay, the author attempts to set the criteria for distinguishing between three approaches within contemporary archeology: a) historical approach: in which the conditions and possibilities determine the framework of archeological practice; b) environmental archeology: in which the given environment outlined by measurements and sample analyses carried out under laboratory conditions may serve as a basis for historicity; c) „ archeology as images ": in which the possibility of displaying and exhibiting the archeological objects represent the main organizing force along which the archeological practice is implemented. The author considers the main elements of the above approaches natural components of archeological activity; yet points out the potential problem of an apparent rift among them, which might cause a serious mental confusion within the discipline of archeology as well as outside of it.
