TERMÉSZETTUDOMÁNY — NATURWISSENSCHAFTEN - Observations concerning the etology and ecology of the Suschkin goose (Anser neglectus Suschk.)
ver, does not exclude the possibility of occasionally finding atavistic specimens with purplish-pink beaks and legs in any population of the A. fabalis race. The problems connected with A. neglectus demand a series of taxonomic evaluations and up-to-date etological and ecological investigations. Owing to the scarcity of Suschkin geese, however, such an investigation may never become possible in the future. The two heads of geese presented in the appendi (drawings made by Csörgey) represent typical specimens of A. neglectus from the invasion in Hortobágy of 1899. The photo of the goose-head comes from a specimen in Kardoskut (October 30, 1972), presenting a specimen of a mixed population of Anser f. fabalis and A. f. rossicus. In this case the beak-ring of the animal, captured alive, was cherry-red, which faded into a shade of flesh-colour after its death. The map attached presents the migrating routes and gathering places of A. neglectus in European steppe-type of regions. The picture of the biotope shows the feeding area of A. neglectus on the phytocenose of Festucetum pseudovinae. 44
