HUNGARIAN FINE CERAMICS, 138 FAIENCE, STONEWARE, AND CHINA tial competition. It had a privileged position in the Austrian provinces, since it was an imperial property. In our exhibition, pots of more modest level are displayed, which were made in Ferdinand Bretzenheim's factory in Regie right from the beginning of the operation of that factory. This can be well discerned on their greenish-white glaze. In the ornamentation of the pots, almost without exception, the very popular green of parsley motif can be seen, which appears painted between two lines in the bosom of the soup-tureen, or on the rims of the plates and on the ink-pot. On the other soup tureen, the simple, so-called ranftl muster motif can be observed. Besides the pots used in civic life, the factory in Regéc produced popular forms as well. Among the Hungarian china factories, the one in Herend has the best reputation. The material from Herend in the Déri Museum comes from the 1850's and 6o's, from the days which are rightly considered the days of glory of the factory. Among the European factories, the factory of Meissen exerted the greatest influence on Herend. In the first herendi display case, the breakfast set is decorated with little birds with diversely colored plumage, which is a Rothschild motif of Meissen origin. From the 1850's on, Oriental, mainly Chinese and Japanese china had a deeper influence on Herend. One of the most beautiful examples of this is the fish-motif, which appears on an ornamental plate, while on the outer side of the plate the so-called Welsh-motif can be seen. Among the products of the factory, statuettes and figurines were always made in a small number. The displayed dishes ornamented with the socalled Dubarry motif demonstrate the influence of the other famous European factory, called Sevres.
