The general discussion of the collection of slides is preceded by a brief introduction with the more important stages of the botanical professor's career, his outstanding professional achievements, and his most important study tours abroad. Rezső Soó was a preeminent figure of Hungarian and international botanical science and among one of its most productive contributors. He was a member of the academy of sciences, a university tutor and a recipient of the Kossuth prize on two occasions. He worked as a professor and head of department at the universities of Debrecen, Kolozsvár (now Cluj) and Budapest, and at the same time was the director of local botanical gardens. A total of 29 books, almost 400 scholarly essays and some 3,000 writings of popular science are linked to his name. His research and study tours took him to three continents and numerous countries, where he made botanical observations and collected herbarium samples. The thousands of photographs he took on his trips entered the collection of the Déri Museum in 1980, in accordance with the professor's last will and testament. The Egyptian photographic legacy discussed in the essay forms one of the most defining parts of the botanist's photographic collection, which is equally significant in respect to its size as well as its contribution to the history of travels and science. Rezső Soó went to Egypt in 1965. His travel in the desert country took him to the stretch of the Nile Valley between Cairo and Aswan, as well as to the environs of the ports of Alexandria and Port Said. It is at these locations that the original pictures of the collection were taken. The Egyptian photographic collection comprises 277 slides but it also contains many reproductions and copies. The original pictures were taken by Rezső Soó and his wife, Ilona Gallé. The themes of the photos are indeed varied and feature natural landscapes, plants, animals, people, ancient Egyptian monuments, Coptic Christian churches, mosques, museums, modern buildings, as well as images of contemporary streets and townscapes. Included among the most valuable pieces are those taken of the Suez Canal, as well as the photographs of documentary value capturing the Aswan High Dam at and those taken of the Temple of Isis on the island of Philae flooded by the swollen waters of the Nile. The professor's account of his travels was published in 1966. His writing titled "In the Land of the Pyramids" and his legacy of photos contribute to a more in-depth study of the natural environment of Egypt as well as its historical and cultural monuments.
