Irodalomtörténet - Bakó Endre: Szabó Pál debreceni kapcsolatai

SZABÓ PÁL DEBRECENI KAPCSOLATAI 137 enthusiastically welcomed by Zsigmond Móricz in the periodical Nyugat [West], His name is linked to the setting up of the periodical Kelet Népe [People ofthe East], which was one of the most importantfora of popular literature. His debut in Debrecen was in 1930 and he had close ties with the Ady Society. He knew several Debrecen writers well and participated in various literary events in the town. He was even planning a local literary periodical in Debrecen with Géza Juhász. After 1945 he nurtured even closer ties with those involved in the literary life ofthe town, and right until his death one ofthe most prominent themes in the periodical Alföld [Great Plain] was the discussion of his oeuvre. The aim of this essay is to document these activities and ties. There is no doubt that between 1949 and 1954 Pál Szabó wrote some novels and short stories the ideals of which were not subsequently substantiated by history. (Isten malmai, [God's Mills], Új Föld [New Land], Hajdú Klári [Klári Hajdú] etc.) but he was also the author of several lasting works, including a few masterpieces (e.g. Lakodalom [Wedding Feast], Keresztelő [Baptism], Bölcső [Cradle] etc.). Thus, his evaluation in literary history should take his entire oeuvre into consideration; this was also stressed by Mihály Csine in his memorial speech of 1993 at a conference held to commemorate the 100th anniversary ofthe writer's birth. It must also be remembered that from 1948 he was a 'companion' of those in power whose ideas he constantly challenged.
