Történettudomány - Surányi Béla: Fejezetek a XX. század hazai takarmánygazdálkodásának körében

128 SURÁNYIBÉLA BélaSurányi CHAPTERS FROM HUNGARIAN FODDER FARMING IN THE 20TH CENTURY According to the centuries-old traditions of animal husbandry in Hungary, feeding the animals only consisted of grazing. The modernisation of Hungarian agriculture, however, increased the importance of the field farming of fodder crops, which contributed to the safer supply of livestock. The development was significant in the 20th century, especially in its second half. The improvement of fodder farming in quality and quantity is rather ambiguous; however, the advancement is clear. The increasingly balanced fodder farming also contributed to higher animal production rates. The introduction of new animal species and the spread of hybridisation resulted in the decreased role and, in some cases, even disappearance of old species and farming traditions. The ancient tradition of animal husbandry and fodder farming is now a subject addressed by Hungarian agricultural history. Even though after the political transition in Hungary the latter could appear under new circumstances, Hungarian agriculture itself is also still in a transitional period.
