Régészet - M. Nepper Ibolya–Sz. Máthé Márta: The Archeological Activity of the Museums in Hajdú-Bihar County in the Years 1981–1985 (A Survey of Finds)

Ibolya M. Nepper-Márta Sz. Máthé THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF THE MUSEUMS IN HAJDÚ-BIHAR COUNTY IN THE YEARS 1981-1985 (A SURVEY OF FINDS) During the surveyed period of time it was only one year that an archaeologist worked in the "Hajdúsági Museum" in Hajdúböszörmény, therefore the whole of the rather intensive archaeological activity, the planned and the rescue excavations were carried out by the co-workers of the Déri Museum. Excavations of great importance were accomplished in the following findspots: in Berettyóújfalu-Herpály, Földvárhalom the excavation of a Neolithic and Bronze Age settlement continued from 1977 to 1982. Here the relics of a Neolithic settlement were dug up from beneath four Bronze Age layers, which together with other settlement remains found outside the "tell" allow the complete reconstruction of the Herpály culture. In the locality of Püspökladány—Eperjes-völgy a planned excavation started in 1977 and was finished in 1982. Altogether 637 graves were uncovered in this entirely undisturbed 10th and 11th century cemetery, one third of which were children graves. The grave goods are outstanding all over the country. In a disturbed tumulus in the findspot Sárrétudvari-Hízóföld 262 graves with rather rich grave furniture from the 10th century were excavated between 1983 and 1985. Beside this cemetery dating from the time of the Hungarian conquest 7 Middle Bronze Age graves of skeletal rite and in the south-western part a Late Bronze Age urn cemetery of 22 graves came to light. The excavations of Middle Ages churches in the surveyed period were also of high significance: at the Great Reformed Church in Debrecen the investigations at the western tower of the gothic St. Andrew church, also the northern sacristy and the campanile —Verestorony—built in 1642 were completed in 1981. In the locality of Debrecen-Dombostanya a new excavation started in 1985: we began to uncover the wall remains of a 15th century church having belonged to the village of Parlag destroyed in 1660. In the findspot of Debrecen-Fancsika Templomdomb we excavated the remains of a 12th century small church of the village of Fancsika already uninhabited in 1573, while in the findspot of Nagycsere-Szentjános-hegy we investigated the foundations of a small-sized, four foiled church from the 12th century having belonged to the destroyed village of Újlak. In the locality of Józsa-Klastrompart we succeeded in uncovering the remains of the foundations of the 13th century church of the village Szentgyörgy (Kismacs). In 1984 we completed the investigations at the fortified curtain walls and corner buildings that surround the reformed church in Hajdúszovát. This piece of architecture gained its presently investigated state through several phases of building from the middle of the 17th century to the end of the 18th century. In the findspot of Hortobágy-Máta Szeghatárhalom we succeeded in digging up the stiff clay foundations of a six-angle-based church from the 11th century and the wall remains of a 12th century small church close by that. Beside the above listed localities archaeological material has also come into the museum from 39 other sites in most cases as the results of terrain prospecting. 61
