Wehner Tibor: "A győri példa"

1 traditional terminology, medium-sized or so-called small sculptures composed for inner spaces, and open-air monumental creations were also born at the city’s symposium. (The European and Hungarian sculptural symposia of artists /Villány, Nagyatád, Dunaújváros/ generally concentrate their activities on monu-mental creations accommodated in sculpture parks.) Some creations of the artists’ symposium of Győr have been included to the city’s public collections and occasionally to the community spaces of the city as well, whereas a greater selection of lasting works that can be placed in the open air have been on show in the sculpture park beside and behind the Sándor Petőfi Community Centre since May of 1997, parading - unfortunately, at present in rather neglected surroundings, works of quite run-down consistency - among others El Kazovszkij, János Fajó, István Nádler and István Ézsiás’s painted iron sculptures, Rezső Móder and István Haraszty’s pendulum-mobiles, Will Brands’s concrete sculpture decorated with iron loops, Frits Vanén, Lutz Ackerman and Agnes Péter’s compositions inducing different forces of space organization with different means. In the exhibition ensemble presented in the rambling space of the cellar and in the upstairs rooms of the Municipal Museum of Art, besides the artists arriving from abroad (like Sabina Hunger, Anu Tuomisaari, Frits Vanén, Wolfgang Prager, Jan Baetsen, Robert Janőoviő, Dan Steffan, Ulrich Kittel and their contemporaries), Hungarians working abroad were present (Katalin Hetey, Gabriela Fekete, Antal Lux) and sculptors who work or used to work in Győr and are very attached to it (István Ézsiás, György Galgóczy, Csaba Illés, László Hefter, Ferenc Lebó) as well. György Galgóczy’s creation of 2003 entitled Plane of Projection - Flat Space and the work dated by his peers (Péter Agens, Robert Jancoviö) in the new millennium indicate at the same time that the work at the sculptors’ symposium established in 197 8 has already been going on for a quarter of a century. It can generally be registered about the works closely connected with the city of Győr through their birth and place of custody that, like in every formation of artists’ symposia, the intention to start and then to maintain an international dialogue was strong here as well. At the meeting point of Hungarian artistic and sculptural phenomena it can be registered as a typical symptom that the artists did not apply the methods of traditional sculpture, the principles and techniques of classical sculpture shaping any more or only in exceptional cases, ocasionally. On the one hand, this tendency is kept alive by the essential determinant that some figurative, naturalistic work created in the spirit of conventions of representation-expression can only be discovered besides the great number of basically nonfigurative compositions representing emphatically geometrical abstract, structural shaping of sculptures and objects. The creations are, for the most part, raw or painted metal sculptures processed with a method of industrial character - welding, rolling, cutting, boring, polishing, etc. - or finds, objects, space installations. Naturally, besides various metals, wood sometimes emerges, and other materials are also applied. 16
