L-ARRABONA 2015-2018. 53-56.____________________________________________TANULMÁNYOK A HISTORIC REVIEW OF THE JAW HARP (“DOROMB”) INSTRUMENT TYPE This historic review of the jaw harp (“doromb”) instrument type points out that in spite of its simple structure its different local versions did not develop independently, but it spread from Southern China or South-West Asia through inter-ethnical connections. This process can be traced fairly well by the names of the instrument applied by the different neighbouring peoples. Due to its spreading from the East to the West, the Hungarians might theoretically be acquainted with it before the Hungarian conquest of the Carpathian Basin, but it is not supported by either the Hungarian denomination of the instrument or the archaeological finds. Moreover, despite names of musicians and denominations of other musical instruments have been known from as early as the 12th century, the name of “doromb” appeared in the historical sources only in the 16th century. Consequently, based on the review of the historical evidences it is to be concluded that this musical instrument appeared in our region from the German language area through Slavic intermediation sometime in the 16th century.
