ARRABONA 2015-2018. 53-56. TANULMÁNYOK Historical existence - artistic consciousness, or the extraordinary history OF THE “KÁRPÁTI Őrség” [“CARPATHIAN Ward”] (1914-15) The monumental work of applied art commemorating the battles between the Russian and Hungarian armies in the Carpathian Mountains is “an artistic apotheosis of the bravery of the Hungarian Army and the protective shield of the country: the Carpathian Mountains”. For this extraordinary work its creator, the artist Bandi Schima A. received the honorary title of the “Master of the Golden Wreath” at the Fourth Budapest National Craftsmanship Exhibition in 1932. A lot of archival documents and photos made it possible to reconstruct this war monument of singular quality and concept and to monitor its stormy history and “mysterious disappearance” during the Second World War. The venues of the research were the Local Historical Collection of the Römer Flóris Museum in Győr, which keeps the artist’s legacy, the Military History Museum in Budapest and the Archives of Győr City. Based on the archive photos having been taken by Bandi Schima A. and the archival sources it was possible to reconstruct a surprisingly detailed picture of this outstanding but lost piece of the First World War applied art of Hungary.
