ARRABONA 2012. 50/2. TANULMÁNYOK THE RESEARCH HISTORY OF AND PUBLICATIONS ON THE SZÉCHENYI CASTLE IN NAGYCENK AND THE OUTLINES OF A CASTLE MONOGRAPH The author, who has been working on a new monograph on the castle, presents a research history of the building. Hungarian art historians and protectors of historic building hardly showed any interest in the baroque and later time castles before the beginning of the 20th century and the fact that the castles were inhabited by his owners restricted the research potentials as well. Historians focused on family history and neglected building history. Caused by the political change after 1945 the castles lost his old function as residence of an aristocratic family and started to crumble (Fig. 1-2). In case of Nagycenk, its rediscovering and renovation in the 1970s demanded the research of the architect history of the building, although a lot of questions could not be answered that time (Fig. 3-4). At the same time the research of the interiors and the way of life was clearly pushed in the background. Only the garden has been restored according to the original plans from the 18th century (Fig 5-6.). The museum opened in the renewed castle saw its duty mainly in the cultivation of the memory of István Széchenyi, a great national reform politician from the middle of the 19th century, who lived there and it meant that its research activities were also dedicated mainly to his life. The results of the different researches have not been summarized until now and the author presents a draft of his planned monograph at the end of the study. Varga Kálmán 134
