THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTIONS IN GYŐR BETWEEN 1922 AND 1925 The National Assembly elections in 1922 were a precondition of the start and takeover of the consolidation of the Horthy regime under István Bethlen’s government. The elections were preceded by high expectations both locally and nationally, since even the social democrats, who boycotted the 1920 elections, took part. The Single Party could not nominate any candidates in Győr, but still there were 3 candidates in both election districts. In the first district the right-wing Christian Dr. Lajos Hegyeshalmi won, while in the second district, which provoked wide national interest, the social democrat Ferenc Miákits came first. However, because of their death (Ferenc Miákits died in 1924, dr. Lajos Hegyeshalmi died in 1925) by-elections should be held. The social democrats could preserve their mandate through Géza Malasits, but the Christian Party lost it in the first district against the candidate of the Civil Party. By the end of the parliamentary cycle the political map of Győr stared to become more characteristic: the districts of Belváros (Downtown), Nádorváros and Szabadhegy were right-winged, Újváros, Sziget and Révfalu were left-winged while Gyárváros was an uncertain district. The only open question left was the extent of the support of the social democrats in Belváros where they could not nominate a candidate in 1922. This question was answered at the 1926 National Assembly elections. Attila Szalai 164
