L WANDERING STUDENTS (PEREGRINI) FROM GYŐR AT GERMAN UNIVERSITIES 1789-1918 Under the influence of the French revolution and the Napoleonic wars the German network of universities went through a considerable restructuration. One of the greatest novelties was the opening of the Berlin University in 1810. This institution prepared by Wilhelm von Humboldt is often seen as the ideal type of the modern age universities. However, not only “classical” universities existed in the one-time Holy Roman Empire, but also other higher educational institutions that probably appealed more to the students of Győr. There were business schools in Hamburg and Braunscheig. In Hannover a veterinarian college operated and technical colleges were established in many towns (Clausthal, 1810; Braunschweig, 1814; Karlsruhe 1825; München, 1827) which later developed into universities. The Hungarian students were interested in agricultural colleges, i.e. in Hohenheim (from 1818) and the art academies, i.e. the Munich Academy of Arts from 1808). Between 1789 and 1919 (in the long century) 88 students of Győr are known to have been enrolled at 103 German universities. In the last decade of the 18th century 4 students went to German universities, but afterwards nobody did so for 40 years. Between 1840 and 1870 the wandering movement is sporadic, but afterwards there was a significant rise. The peak with 33 students came in the first decade of the 20th century, which is parallel with the national trend. The list of the preferred universities was completely changed compared to the 18th century. The new trends were as follows: 1. the technical universities and colleges came to the forefront; 2. the German art colleges and academies became favoured; 3. the new type of “mass” university became popular; 4. the old, traditional universities became less appealing. However, most of the Győr students chose the agricultural studies. Attila Szilárd Tar ARRABONA 2012. 50/1._______________________________________________________TANULMÁNYOK 118
