ARRABONA 2011.49/1. TANULMÁNYOK “MAKING BORDER MOUNDS ON THEIR LANDS...” INSPECTION OF LANDMARKS AND LANDMARKS BETWEEN KAPUVÁR, BABÓT AND GARTA IN 1678 The exact marking of borders in the modern sense of the term has not had a long history. Initially, only the more conspicuous points if the fields were marked that were connected by an imaginary line. These landmarks - ditches, waters, marked trees, moulds, etc. - played an important role in maintaining and keeping track of the borders. Especially important was the method of carving a cross into the bark of the trees. Trees marked with a cross were banning signs, while the magic sign protected the fields. Marking the lands and renewing the landmarks were done by an official process called inspection of the landmarks, which was recorded in official minutes signed and authenticated by the people who were present. The marking of the borders of Kapuvár, Garta and Babót occurred due to a conflict that arose on disputed pastures. The text of the so called “border letter” dated from 1678 mentions such landmarks that went out of use in the coming centuries, so it can be of interest for both local historians and ethnographers.
