TANULMÁNYOK A WELL THAT FELL THROUGH History of the construction of the one-time ornamental well on the Széchényi Square in Győr Upon the centenary of Győr having been granted the Free Royal Town Rights the Local Council of the city decided to create an enduring memory of this outstanding event in the history of Győr and erect an ornamental well in the main square replacing the existing public well. The designs were prepared by Fruman Antal who represented this well even in his contemporary aquarelle showing the main square. The details of the construction of this monument have been unclear up till now, so many false information have been published concerning the actual circumstances. Based on the archival documents that have been found recently not only the process of the designing and construction but also the identity of the contractors of the different work phases could be indentified. Moreover, even those debates could be reconstructed that followed the different work phases and the inglorious demolition of this monument at the end of the 19th century. Gyula Perger 300
