LADISLAS BY HABSBURG LADISLAS V The plate decorated with a coat of arms in the middle of the St. Ladislas herm, which caused a lot of problems up to now, might have been a well-considered votive offering of Habsburg Ladislas V inspired by his personal devotion. The offering could have also been justified by other motives, i.e. political propaganda or the reverence of the dynastic ancestors. However, it is also possible that the new title of the Santo Stefano Rotondo Church in Rome was the actual triggering motive, since this patron change might have required the placement of the relics of the Hungarian saint kings in the main altar. In this framework the church might have received a splinter from the skull of St. Ladislas and this might have been an opportunity to carry out some changes even on the reliquary itself. Beside the many unanswerable questions one thing seems sure: The spiritual background of the offering must have been the humanist court environment in Vienna and the saint-cult of the family which was strongly determined by Vitéz János, Bishop of Várad who was able to connect the personal devotion of the young king - Lesey V- with the interests of his diocese and the spiritual traditions of the Kingdom of Hungary. 1453 ANMERKUNGEN UND ANREGUNGEN ZUR VEREHRUNG DES HL. LADISLAUS DURCH LADISLAUS POSTUMUS (V.) AUS DEM HAUS DER HABSBURGER Die in der Mitte des Reliquiars des Hl. Ladislaus angebrachte, bis dahin zahlreiche Probleme verursachende Platte mit Wappen war wahrscheinlich eine Votivgabe, und zwar ein von Ladislaus V. gut durchdachtes, von persönlicher Devotion inspiriertes Geschenk. Die Schenkung konnte natürlich darüber hinaus noch mehrerer Gründe haben: politische Propaganda, die Verehrung der dynastischen Ahnen. Man kann jedoch annehmen, dass die neue Bezeichnung der römischen Kirche Santo Stefano Rotondo der konkrete Auslöser gewesen war, denn der Wechsel des Patroziniums konnte es sein, der die Unterbringung der Reliquien der ungarischen heiligen Könige im Hauptaltar notwendig machte. Im Rahmen dessen erhielt man auch aus dem Schädelknochen des Hl. Ladislaus einen Splitter, der zugleich Anlass gewesen sein konnte, an dem Reliquiar mehr oder weniger größere Eingriffe vorzunehmen. Neben den zahlreichen, gezwungenermaßen offen gelassenen Fragen scheint eines jedoch als sicher. Den geistigen Hintergrund der Schenkung konnten das höfische Umfeld der Wiener Humanisten und die Achtung vor den Heiligen der Familie motiviert haben, in welchem dem Bischof von Varad, Janos Vitéz, eine herausragende Rolle zugeordnet werden muss, der die persönlichen Devotion des jungen Königs, die Interessen seiner Diözese und die ideellen Traditionen des Ungarischen Königreiches am wirksamsten verbinden konnte. 390
