ARRABONA 41.2003. TANULMÁNYOK Imre Tóth: "On the Rainbow/Bridge of a More Promising Future" (Idealists and realists on the issue concerning Western Hungary) In 1932 Gyula Gömbös, the former area protector formed a cabinet in Hungary. The Prime Minister - who was also associated with the insurrection in Western Hungary - was expected in Hungary and abroad to make an effort to regain the possession of Burgenland. However, it soon turned out that the congenial relationship of the political ideas represented by Gömbös and the trend followed by Engelbert Dolfuss in Austria excludes all sorts of territorial claims to be put on the agenda. The national supporters of the political trend - of corporative patterns, anti-parliamentarian in nature and authoritarian in character - represented by Dolfuss expected Austria to renounce voluntarily the possession of Western Hungary, while others - first of all the representatives of the extreme right in Hungary - hoped that after the Anschluss Burgenland as a gift by Hitler would be returned to Hungary. Nevertheless, the realists were aware of the weakness of the Hungarian revisionist claims against Austria, and their doubt concerning the generosity of the German Chancellor was also justified. Instead of hoping for the restoration of the former border along the Lajta, they paid anxious attention to the declarations and publications of the German „ostraumpoliticians" setting up a claim for the territories in Transdanubia inhabited by German people. 267
