ARRABONA41.2003. TANULMÁNYOK Tibor Almási: A Forgotten Painter of Győr: Pál Benes Pál Benes, the painter was born in Győr in 1867. He studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna between 1887 and 1892. After this he improved his knowledge and skills in Munich attending Simon Hollósy's open school and later in another open school in Rome. In the final years of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century his works were on show in the yearly exhibitions of the Hungarian National Association of Fine Arts and those of the National Saloon where his paintings achieved success. From 1898 on he worked in the colony for artist in Nagybánya for many years. In 1904 he returned into his native town, Győr, where he opened a school for painting. He regularly exhibited his effective and colourful paintings of landscape and animals for the local patrons of art. Beyond his creative activity, together his youngest brother he established a chemical factory in 1904. Until his death he chaired the Association of Fine and Applied Arts in Győr, established in 1919. The highly honoured and appreciated painter was commissioned by the city of Győr to paint portraits and to complete other orders put officially.
