ZOLTÁN SZÉKELY: The Baroque Cult of Saint Stephen's Image in Győr Fundamentally, the 17-18-century sacral cult of the first Hungarian monarch, King Saint Stephen, was the embodiment of the catholic national sense of identity, which was strongly attached to the cult of the Blessed Virgin Mary: these two aspects composed the most effective idea of Catholicism in Hungary in the age of the Baroque: the concept of Patronn Hungáriáé. This thought is most adequately represented in the scene of offering the crown, but it is also included through allusions in other types of representation. At the same time Saint Stephen's personality proved to be suitable for impersonating actual ideological-political trends which gained authority and historic justification. In this way Saint Stephen's figure could serve the catholic restoration, the fight against the heathen Turks in the 17 century, and the reputation of the Bishop's See in Győr together with the Benedictine Abbey on Saint Martin's Hill in the following century. In the former case Saint Stephen represented the catholic answers for the most urgent problems of the age, while in the latter case he became the embodiment of some traditions of smaller range. 189
