Tanulmányok – Közelmények - Székely Zoltán: Hieronymi Ottó Ferenc (1766/68–1829)
TANULMÁNYOK - KÖZLEMÉNYEK ARRABONA 37.1999. the ancient Greek bust suggests his modern erudition. This composition also had a prototype which was a depiction of archduke Ferenc Hickel with the bust of Joseph II, painted around 1785. Hieronymi's latest known work is a "memento-painting"of the national civic guard of Győr from 1822. It presents the parade of the national guard on the main square of Győr as well as other events from the napoleonic war, the battle of Kismegyer, the siege of Győr and the battle of Lipcse (1813) in which 30 hussars from Győr took part. The picture blends the artistic forms of the veduta (the main square), the depiction of a contemporary event (the parade) and the battle scenes. However, it is not quite successful on the whole. The work of Hieronymi is a typical example to the art of Hungarian craftsmen feeding from a sort of neutral blend of the styles baroque and classicism at the beginning of the 19* century. From 1818 Hieronymi worked as a teacher of the local drawing school until his death in 1829. The aim of the institute was to improve the trade by teaching the guild-apprentices as well as to generally develop the visual culture of the primary and secondary school students. Today there are not any known drawings of Hieronymi or his students, however, the local authorities' records show us that his work was only middling (mittelmaßig). He was also up against the local magistracy which maintained the guilds and schools, because of financial abuse. During his teaching school standards continued falling. His son, Franz Otto Hieronymi jr. (1803-?) graduated as an engineer in the Institutum Geometriáim, Budapest in 1823. After that he became the city vice-engineer in Győr. We know his city map drawn in 1824. Later he worked on the survaying of the Danube and after the death of his father he applied unsuccessfully to the empty teacher's seat in the drawing school. 319
