ARRABONA 37.1999. TANULMÁNYOK - KÖZLEMÉNYEK IMRE ENZSÖL: The Story of the Song and Music Society of Moson (MÉZE) (1926-1949) In its 23-year life, the song and music society of Moson (Mosoni Ének és Zeneegylet -MÉZE) earned a good reputation far beyond the county borders by its amateur choir and orchestra which was formed by the enthusiastic citiziens of the village. It was established in 25 th February 1926 in the private room of the Briegl Restaurant. In 1930 the Society moved to the banquet hall of Fehér ló and remained there until its liquidation. A member of the national assembly, Dr. Loránd Khüne, became the president and Dr. S. Kornél Bencsik, the clergyman of Moson, was chosen to be the vice-president. The MÉZE held several musically sophisticated concerts of performances of excellent quality under the hand of the talented conductor and art director, János Enge. The MÉZE contained a men's choir, a mixed choir and a band. János Enge also established a music school for children in 5 th March 1933 which became their recruitment institution. The members number grew from 86 to 135 between 1930 and 1938. In 1933, in the National Singing competition the MÉZE mixed choir achieved the second, while the men's choir made the third prize. Standing out from other local singing groups the MÉZE also built up useful correspondences with Austrian and Swiss singing societies. Moreover, they performed in radio several times. However, it was forcibly dissolved by the Rákosi government in 1949 for its unwanted civil attitude to the policy of that time. 1. kép: A Mosoni Ének- és Zeneegylet alapítói 1926-ban 228
