GABRIELLI Gabriella- NEMES András: Details of the history of the crypt of St. George Chapel in Sopron The crypt of St. George Chapel, which was founded by Jesuits in 1731, was explored in the summer of 1 997. During the works it turned out that the crypt was situated in the basement of the southern wing of the earlier Vitnyédy House. In the 1 650's, after the destruction of two previous dwelling-houses, Steve Vitnyédy had his house built in a showy style which was later taken over by the Order of Jesuits. The building burnt down in the fire of 1 676. It was reconstructed by the Jesuits and their monastery was also set up there. The renewal of the southern wing never happened since at that time the extension of the chapel took place and this was the only way to build windows into the walls of the northern wing. The chapel and the monastery formed an architectural and functional unity. During the establishment of the crypt a passage was built between the basement of Vitnyédy House and the place under the sanctuary. The wall-painting of Jesus on the cross is also stamming from this time. This later one consists of only a few remaining pieces. In the first half of the 1 9th century the crypt was still in use according to the signed boards which were found there. Only parts of the basement have remained from the original Vitnyédy House. The rest of the building at 7 St. George Street is a result of the works of the Jesuits and of the reconstruction process after World War II. F. TÓTH Zsuzsanna: Wardrobes from Moson county A very vivid guild and merchant industry characterized the towns of the historical Moson county. The rising of the county center Magyaróvár was not only due to trade but also a result of industrialisation. The first remaining written document of the joiner's guild of Magyaróvár was the Guild Regulations from 1 728 in German and Latin. Their seal from this time was still used as a gauge in the 1 9th century. Wardrobes were a major group of containers only starting to spread to peasant households in the 1 8th century. They were already in use in burgher houses in the 1 400's. 1 6 painted wardrobes can be found in the folk art collection of the Hanság Museum, though only 8 of them are recorded. According to form they conjure cabinet works applied with a frontispiece of trapezoid shape. Their painting follows the set up of panelled inlaid wardrobes. ARRABONA Rlk] 36/1-2.
