Tanulmányok - Henkey Gyula: Ethnical-Anthropological Features of Hungarians from the Rabaköz Region

Gyula took care of him in Pest until his death in 1 894. The renowned museum in Győr was named after him in 1951, thus paying a tribute to the scientific activity of the great traveller and ethnographer. Eszter T. Szőnyi Data on the Trace of the Route between Brigetio and Savaria An approx. 400 m long section of the Roman road between Brigetio and Savaria was discovered at Ménfőcsanak, near the junction of the highways Ml and 83 during the 1995 excavation season. The stretch situated south of Arrabona was extremely worn-down, recognizable only in traces, and lined by water channels on both sides (fig.l). From these channels, the remains of five milestones came to light (fig. 2); among them three were legible and in good condition. The milestones, erected under the reign of ELAGABALUS, and PHIUPPUS ARABS, respectively, stood on the same place: A BRIGETIONE MP XXXIIII (at a distance of 34 miles from Brigetio). It is especially interesting, that the name of the proconsul of Pannónia inferior was mentioned on those erected in 218. The article deals with other milestones found along the same road-section as well, discusses the further direction of the route between Arrabona and Savaria, and offers an explanation for the fact that the miles along the road leading through the province were numbered from two directions, namely starting from both Savaria and Brigetio. Gyula Hen key: Ethnical-Anthropological Features of Hungarians from the Rábaköz Region Between 1989 and 1993, 1037 Hungarians were examined in 10 villages of autochthonous inhabitants in the vicinity of the small towns Csorna and Kapuvár (North-West Hungary). This investigation was important concerning the origin of the Hungarian people as well, since this region was not affected by the Osmanli Turk occupation, the borderland around here was defended by the Pechenegs and conqueror clans of Kabar origin. On five villages: Bősárkány, Osli, Beled, Rábatamási and Rábapatona, the population is still aware of its partially Pecheneg origin. The basic data of the Rábaköz people can be found in Tables 1-19. Their stature is higher than the Hungarian average, their head-indexis moderately brachycephalic, the width of their zygomatic arch is slightly smaller, convex nasal line and dark eye-colours occur more often among them. According to Hiernaaux's distance-calculations (Table 21) the population of the Rábaköz has identical characteristics with the autochthonous population of Transuulvania, South Slovakia, West Transdanubia and of the territory north-east of the river Tisza. Among the examined population, the occurrence of Turanid (35,4 %), Pamirian (19,3 %), Dinaroid (8,6), and East Mediterranean (6,1 %) varieties is the most significant (Table 22). Among the Turanids, the Lowland variety in the most frequent one (Fig. 6-9), and the occurence of the North Kazakhstan variety (Fig. 3-5) is fairly significant too. The Turanid medium type (Fig.l) and the South Siberian variety (Fig. 2) can rarely be observed, while the (Turano-PaARRABONA 35/1-2.
