work of a staff of several members in planned scientific research and populai education. Taken seriously ill, Béla Szőke had to cede the direction to Sándor Mithay. The museum led several excavations of Prehistoric and Roman sites, it also opened its standing exhibition. In 1958 András Uzsoki became director of the museum. Between 1958 and 1962 the museum building has been entirely restored as an art monument, the reposi­tories have been rearranged according to modern requirements, in 1962 one of the largest standing exhibitions of the country has been opened. In 1957 modern stone­works, in 1958 Roman stonework finds, in 1963 a picture gallery have been added as special collections. Celebrating the centenary of its foundation, the museum started the publication of its bulletin „Arrabona" in 1959. In connection with the standing exhibition, the Hungarian Society for Archae­ology, History of Art and Numismatics held its itinerary congress at Győr in 1962; in the next year the assembly hall of the museum became the site of the second conference on municipal history, organized by the Hungarian Historical Society and us. In 1962 the museums of the country (except the institutions on a national level) have been entrusted to the local councils; thereby the Győr Museums has become the county center of all the museums of Győr-Sopron county. The speedily develo­ping institution possesses an expert staff, the repositories contain almost all sorts of objects collected by museums in an up-to-date arrangement.
