Aristocratic culture in 18"' century Hungary

The objective of the study is to present a sort of overview of the cultural history of the long 18th century, emphatically joining the change of approach that considers the events of the century much more as a process than as a breakthrough and, on the other hand, connects the Hungarian reception of the French Enlightenment not to the last quarter of the century but 20—25 years earlier, thus regarding the coexistence of the various categories of ideology and art as one of the most important characteristics of the era. Furthermore, it does not believe that the Baroque was clearly a form of expression of conservatism or that an enlightened aristocrat could not adapt to social clichés that might have been judged outdated from a Western European point of view. Considering the areas generally encompassed by cultural history, it reviews the realms of travel, education, diplomacy, religious and secular culture and examines the modern products of arts from visual art through verbal forms to the characteristics of theatre as an all-art form. With the overview, the author intends to point at the active social responsibility present in the aristocracy of the era, with which it wished to become the fundament of Hungary after the Turkish occupation.
