Tamás Kesf: Cinerary urns from the Nagyrév Culture ornamented with symbolic representations found at the Kisapostag - Dunai-dűlő site Grave No. 38 There was no contour of gravefill. The urn and the edges of the bowl placed in the mouth of the urn with its bottom down were damaged during farming activities and excavators used for topsoil stripping. During the ceremony, after placing the urn, the grave was half buried,9 and then two mugs were placed to the shoulder of the urn: a biconical one from the Kisapostag Culture to the east, and a belly mug from the Nagyrév Culture to the north-west. The latter has slighdy inclined to the north, while the former and the urn to the north-west (Fig. 2, No. 1—2). The bottom diameter of the urn is 10.8 cm, the largest diameter of its belly is 37.8 cm, the body has a slighdy oval cross-section, its reconstructed rim diameter is 30.6 cm, its height is 34.3 cm, and the wall thickness is approx. 7 mm (Fig. 2, No. 3). It was slighdy tempered with sand. The outer surface of the vessel was burnished. It was poorly fired. Its colour is dark brown with lighter spots. The vessel is damaged and incomplete, yet its decoration can be clearly reconstructed (Fig. 3). A bundle of three lines runs on the shoulder of the vessel and breaks in a stair-like pattern on both sides of the handle, and extends vertically below the belly of the vessel. The vertical bundles of lines are connected by 4+4 oblique lines intersecting each other (Fig. 2, No. 4). On both sides of the handle, a W-shaped motif is connected to the stair-like projections. The main scene is located on the opposite side of the handle (Fig. 2, No. 3): two roughly parallel vertical bundles, consisting of three fines each, originate from the bundle of fines running on the shoulder. Of these, the left bundle — just like in the case of the motif under the handle — is slighdy inclined towards the other one. The whole thing gives the impression that the right-handed creator involuntarily drew the lines towards their drawing hand. In this case, the surface between the two bundles is filled with 5+6 intersecting oblique lines. On both two sides, a human figure with a raised arm is linked to the bundles of lines. The head of this figures and their other hand, which is next to the body, are made up of a W-shaped motif each. The middle tips of these W motifs are connected to the double lines forming the body. Between the two fields, three times three grooves are located under the horizontal bundle of lines. There is no residue of white inlay anywhere in the grooves. Based on the urn10, the bowl11 (Fig. 4, No. 1 ), the mug from the Late Nagyrév Culture12 (Fig. 4, No. 2) and the mug dated to the second phase of the Kisapostag Culture13 (Fig. 4, No. 3—5), the digging of the grave can be dated to the late period of the Nagyurév Culture. 9 There was no evidence of manipulation of the grave after the funeral. 10 KALICZ-SCHREIBER 1995, 38-39.
