Győrfy - József Vajda Representation of the spatial dimensions of the authenticating excavation of a “four-lobed church” In 2014, at the Saint Pope John Paul II Square (Székesfehérvár, Hungary) an authenticating excavation was conducted by the experts of the King Saint Stephen Museum. During the excavation, remains of a “four-lobed church” and of some of the related tombs were unearthed, which had already been partially excavated in the ‘70s by Alan Kralovánszky. During the exploration, we had the opportunity to test various data capture methods. In 2012, our museum started to prepare photo-based site layouts (back then in 2D). Owing to the fast development and availability of software programmes, today spatial photography applications that allow users to capture 3D images have gained ground because of their positive visual qualities and great usability. This method seemed to be the most suitable for a fast and accurate documentation of the unearthed tombs. At the end of the exploration, aerial images were taken using a quadcopter, and in cooperation with Geomontan Kft. and the University of Óbuda, Alba Regia Faculty of Technology, Institute of Geoinformatics, the area was surveyed using a laser scanner. Fotogrammetria Kft. was engaged to document the walls. Data were captured and then vector and raster files to be used with CAD software were generated with the so-called IMS digital photogrammetry technology. As a “by-product” of the survey, 3D recordings have been made which enable a virtual tour of the entire surface. In our article, we strive to present the use of these technologies and to form an opinion about their usability, highlighting their advantages and disadvantages, also by comparing them with each other. 60
