Summary ACKNOWLEDGEMENT References abbreviation Summary This document discusses the three partially excavated cemeteries in the region of Nagyvenyim that enrich our knowledge of Avar age Mezőföld (PI. I/1). Of these burial sites the most important is the Munkácsy utca — Fűzfa utca site consisting of 29 graves (Pl. II./1). Its importance is based on its level of excavation and its usage in the whole Avar period. The early Avar burials took place in the Eastern part of the site while the late Avar graves in the Western side. Although the early graves are almost without exception disturbed, the late ones are mostly untouched and served with implications to burial practices (pole framework, coffin). In these graves cast bronze belt set, agraffe and pearl earrings were found (Pl. XIIXIII). The belt set found in the first grave counts as a unique artefact in the Avar age Carpathian Basin, Dunántúl (large belt ending, small belt ending, iron mounts). This belt set is a multi-layer iron-copper alloy. Most of the graves contained animal bones and ceramic vessels. Among the ceramics we can find the fast wheel-thrown grey ceramics from the 7th century and yellow ceramics from the 8th century, the slow wheel-thrown vessels and hand-built mugs and pots. Among others further grave goods saw daylight such as spearhead, purse closing mount, iron buckles, and a bronze band that can probably be interpreted as part of an amulet capsule, bronze band rings, supposedly gold and different bronze earrings, iron knives, spindle-whirls, and disentangling bone hook. 34 HR
