250° 290' Fig. 4. Sex-distribution and orientation in 10-11th с cemeteries Graves of different depths are not evenly distributed within the cemetery. Deeper graves are found in the northern wing, while shallower ones in the southern wing. D. Preparation of Graves Only in regard to grave 33 do we have the slightest suspicion that the pit was somehow prepared before the dead was put into the grave. Small plant remains preserved by a bronze patina were found under the pelvis of the Fig. 5. Age-groups and orientation in 10-1 lth с cemeteries skeleton. J. S t i e b e r examined the find and the inconclusive report indicated that it was either a young linden shoot or the remains of a mallow stalk. This find in itself is, however, inadequate for us to assert that branches of flowers were placed in the grave for it is possible that they accidentally fell into the grave. E. Covering of the Dead The use of wooden coffins was observable only twice in the cemetery. It was impossible to determine the shape and size of the coffin manifest as a discoloration or only as traces. Again only in two instances could it be observed that the dead was tightly wrapped in something. This we concluded from the irregular position of the skeletal bones. But we have no clue as to its material. Both the custom of using wooden coffins and wrapping the dead are known phenomena in this area during the treated period. F. Position of the Dead In all instances the dead of the cemetery were lying on their backs. The legs were generally extended parallely, but in some instances they were slightly bent at the knee. This method of placing the dead was in general use in the area during the period under discussion. 7 97
