Tokod sites 1. Tokod-Altár à To the South of the village, beginning at the Kőhegy of Dorog, a coa 3 km long sandy hill extends in the direction E-W as far as Erzsebet-pit, Várberek. All along the surface of this mound the traces of a widely extending settlement are found in patches. a) In the territory of the mud pit of shaft No. 15, on its northern side, rescue excavation has unearthed a part of the settlement. In course of mining works the scattered material of coa 20 cremation graves came to light in this area. 26 b) In the territory of Tokod-Erzsébet-shaft, Várberek, excavations of the Roman camp have brought two refuse pits to light. This is the westernmost point of the series of Altáró settlements. 27 2. Nyergesújfalu. a) A scattered grave, belonging to our. group, is known from this place.^ ° b) At the site Nyergesu jfaïw-Brickworks we have an almost entirely uncovered settlement. 31 The site is situated on the bank of the Danube, in the eastern part of the village lands, cca 500 metres from the brickworks. This is one of the most important settlements of the group. (PI. XX). c) From Nyergesujjalu-Sánchegy scattered finds are preserved in the Hungarian National Museum. (Inv. No.: 1877. 78. 1-2.) 3. Esztergom and its surroundings Only stray finds are known, acpuired by the Esztergom Museum from the collection of the Primate-Archbishop. (Notes 2-3.) 4. Dorog Only scattered finds are known, having no exact definition of site. (Note 6.) Fig. 1. c) Mud pit of the Arpád-shaft. In the mining pit at the eastern part of the Altáró hills earthworks yielded a large number of cremation graves. In 1961 we uncovered 6 graves of cremation and scattered cremation burial on the north-western side of the mudder. 28 d) The Hungarian National Museum preserves stray pieces from TOkod too, without an exactly defined site. 29 e) Tokod-Hegyeskő. The rescue excavation of the Esztergom Museum brought five graves of urn-cremation rite to light on this site in Tokod territory (PL XVIII). (Inv. No.: Esztergom 1960. 3. 1. — 1960. 7. 1.) 5. Süttő-Hosszúvölgy 3. km to the West from the village, at the top of the hill situated on the left side of the Vienna causeway, a settlement of the Tokod group is known. At the foot of the hill a settlement of the Magyarád culture was uncovered. 32 (PI. XIX). 6. a) Neszmély-Várhegy On the north-western slope of the Várhegy, near to the precipice opposite to the house 46, Szentmiklósi Sreet, three cremation graves have come to light. 33 6. b) Neszmély-Brick-wovks The cemetery of the Early Iron Age yielded also two cremation graves.
